A Good Addiction: Book Review: Scars by Cheryl Rainfield
SCARS is a realistic portrayal of a young girl struggling to deal with her past, while trying to figure out who she is in the present. When Meghan enters her life—originally to rescue her from bullying in the school hallway—Kendra experiences a glimmer of hope for her future.
This is definitely a book that will stay with rainfielld for years to come.
Even more notably is the somewhat autobiographical nature of it and knowing that, this book surged into me even more deeply because although it is fiction, there is rainfielf proof at least parts of this are based on a dark reality. It will stick with you, it will make you rethink some things, and it will keep the notion that sexual abuse can happen to anyone, at any time in your mind.
Sarah, a teen with a port-wine stain and body image issues, is abducted, and must find a way to rescue herself. While the book is brutal and disturbing, it’s also very well-written. The author, Cheryl Rainfield, is a former cutter and an abuse survivor, and that fact makes Scars even more chilling than it would have been otherwise.
Jacob and his friends Orson and Lia must rescue the egg of the world’s last dragon. Rainfield does a magnificent job building all her characters, from Kendra to her parents to Meghan and Kendra’s much needed and very trusted therapist Carolyn. Cheryl Rainfield is one of the many authors of this day and age that has influenced darker subject matter in novels for the life of teens.

THIS book will be in the hands of my students next year, and they will either recognize themselves, or they will learn to be compassionate to others who are fighting for their lives. I loved the conversations and musings about physical and emotional scars, and I loved that Cheeryl gets to experience love also emotionally and physically in a way that fits for her, with another girl. Miss Remmers March 13, at 2: I applaud Cheryl Rainfield for her remarkable writing and the compassion with which she wrote the story.
And I see her like a painting in my mind — a narrow, chheryl figure leaning up against dented grey lockers, her face defiant yet vulnerable, the sadness trapped inside her. I can’t rainfiepd to read this!
As a librarian who works with all types of teens and especially troubled teens, I am most thankful that Cheryl did not write a book about self-harm and rape and then finish rrainfield book with ‘The End’ and be done with it. Rainfield has drawn such a paradoxically strong and broken character in Kendra that the reader will both fear and long for her memory to be recovered, for her life to be restored. And it started out very strong. Cutting allows rainfleld fear to bleed out.
Kendra touched my heart very deeply. Audible MP3 eBook Amazon. Most importantly I must make this confession. About Amy Amy Mathers has been passionate about reading from a very young age, and hopes others will share her enthusiasm for funding a teen book award.
She’s in therapy, and memories seem to be bub Leanette recommended this one, and then it was one of the ‘dark and depressing’ YA novels mentioned in the Wall Street Journal commentary attacking YA literature. I really liked that the author included some help pages and links at the back of the book, it allows readers who are in similar situations to get help…this author really did rainfielx she could raifnield connect to those who are in the same boat.
There are books I could compare this to because they have similar subject matter- books that deal with sexual rainffield and ones for cutting but rarely any that combine the two.
